What should you do if you experience SNORING or symptoms o f SLEEP APNEA?

The first step is to visit an ENT surgeon. Every area that can be the responsible for the obstruction must be examined.

Once the problem(s) has been identified, a treatment plan can be made to get you healthy again! Depending on the situation a sleep study (polysomnogram) may be requested after treatment.

Take charge and break the cycle!

What is the problem with SNORING?

Snoring indicates that your body is struggling to get air into your lungs during sleep. The obstruction can cause episodes where you stop breathing altogether! Your blood oxygen level falls so low that your brain wakes you up so that you start breathing again to get your oxygen level up!

This cycle is called OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA.

Why do people snore?

For air to flow from the nose to the lungs smoothly, the pathway must be unobstructed.
As soon as there is an obstruction, the body struggles to get the air from the nose to the lungs, and the breathing becomes noisy.
That noise is called SNORING!

There are several areas from the nose to the lungs that can cause an obstruction of the airflow.

Look at the photo below. It shows how the obstruction can be in:
* The nose
* The area behind the nose
* The throat
* The back of the tongue
* The lowest part of the throat (above the voice box)

Most often, there are more than one area that work together to cause obstruction.
